Evan Baynes ’13, who graduated with a B.A. in economics/international studies, recently was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He also received the Air Force ROTC Distinguished Graduate award.

Rhodes, in cooperation with The University of Memphis and the Departments of the Army and Air Force, participates in cross-town agreements that provide the opportunity for Rhodes students to enroll in ROTC. The commissioning ceremony took place this month on The University of Memphis campus.

The college will pay tribute to staff on May 16. Staff members with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 40 years of service will be recognized at the program.

Rhodes is tournament host for the 2013 NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional Championship that begins today.

Annual awards were presented at the 164th Commencement Exercises of Rhodes College on May 11 on campus. Rhodes graduates Catherine Carlile and Ian Engdahl and Plough Foundation Chair Diane Rudner received the 2013 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards. The awards are presented annually to two graduating seniors (one male and one female) and one non-student who have given selflessly to others and the college.

Rhodes alumna Amy Lawrence has been named the grand-prize winner of the 2013 Memphis Magazine Fiction Contest for her story “To Be Happy."

After four years as a student in Memphis, many seniors consider staying in the city to start their careers. And the organization Choose 901 exists to convince them to do just that. Founded in 2012 by John Carroll, executive director of City Leadership, the campaign encourages college graduates to choose Memphis as a city to live and work. Over the past year, Rhodes has become more involved with the non-profit through the Kinney program.

Today′s senior class photo will be taken at 9:30 a.m. in Mallory gym. Also commencement rehearsal will be at 10 a.m. in the three-court gym of the BCLC.
