Internships can oftentimes be difficult to land as an undergrad, particularly with international companies like the Hearst Corporation or Condé Nast, publishers of some of the world’s most iconic magazines. We asked Olivia Santarelli ’13, who has interned at both Seventeen and Vogue in the past two years, to share her advice for undergrads desiring to snag one of these coveted positions.

Tell us about your internship with Vogue. How did you land such an awesome opportunity?

Megan Andrews Starling, associate director of admission at Rhodes, received the Rising Star award given by the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC).

Hamlett Dobbins, director of the Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College, has been selected a 2013-14 Rome Prize Winner.

The Nu Eta chapter—a joint chapter of Rhodes College and Christian Brothers University—of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been rechartered after being absent from the campus for nearly 20 years. A celebration recently was held at Evergreen Presbyterian Church, and Dr. Ernest L. Gibson III, assistant professor of English at Rhodes, was named new campus advisor.

Photos from the Unsheltered: Unseen project organized by Rhodes College students will be showcased Friday, April 26, at Crosstown Arts located at 430 N. Cleveland. Free and open to the public, the show is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Rhodes College Chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society, held its annual induction ceremony recently and welcomed nine new members.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students at accredited colleges and universities, the society recognizes outstanding scholarship in the French language and its literatures to increase the knowledge and appreciation of the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world and to stimulate and encourage French and francophone cultural activities.

Student-athletes, coaches and guests gathered April 17 in the McCallum Ballroom to celebrate the 2012-13 varsity athletic year.

Lindsey Svehla, a biology major from Bellevue, Neb., and Katie Faucher, an environmental studies major from Jefferson, Mass., received the Rebecca Rish Gay Award, given to the most valuable senior female athlete(s). Svehla is a member of the Women′s Track & Field Team, and Faucher is a member of Rhodes′ Field Hockey Team.

Dr. Clara Pascual-Argente, assistant professor of Spanish, has been awarded the Mellon Fellowship in Medieval Studies at the University of Notre Dame′s Medieval Institute for the academic year 2013-2014. The Medieval Institute boasts the largest contingent of medievalists in North American universities, a group of top scholars working in a wide variety of disciplines.

This fellowship will permit Pascual-Argente to work on her book manuscript, “The Invention of Antiquity: Memory and Anachronism in the Castilian Roman Antique.”

Ailsa Bryce ’15 recently presented her paper “The Structural and Cultural Causes of Femicide” at the 21st annual Latin American Studies Symposium hosted by Birmingham Southern College. The paper was presented at a session focusing on violence against women and women’s movements.

Phoebe Strom ’14 receives a second place award in world history after presenting her paper at the Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference.
