From Elvis Presley and Otis Redding to the North Mississippi All Stars and Lucero, the Memphis area is renowned for its cultivation of musical talent.

Rhodes alumnus Bryan Coker assumed duties this month as Goucher College’s new vice president and dean of students.

Alumna Regan Humphrey will have her honors research at Rhodes published in the Journal of Educational Research. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 2012. Her work titled “I’m Gonna Tell You About It’: Authorial Voice and Conventional Skills in Writing Assessment and Educational Practice” focuses on the relationship of children’s writing skills and their academic performance.

Dr. Gail Murray will present a talk on Feb. 21 at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art about its current exhibition “Angels and Tomboys: Girlhood in 19th-Century American Art.”

In an event centered on the publications of his book The Elections of 2012, Michael Nelson, the Fulmer Professor of Political Science at Rhodes, will lead a roundtable discussion.

Four Rhodes student leaders are among area college students who recently participated in the “Students Connect with Mayor” event held at The University of Memphis on Feb. 13. They are Alex Dileo ’16, Gayle Hughes ’13, Mary Catherine Reeves ’13, and Shane Watson ’14.

Looking for a place to chill or get some studying done? While the Middle Ground is an awesome place to chit-chat with friends, sometimes it’s nice to have a more private space to hunker down and do your work. The best place for this—the common room. And with many common rooms all across campus, it’s easy to find the best one for you. The common rooms on campus are very versatile—they are used for meetings, studying and informal socializing. Here are some of our favorites:

Whether you’re a classically trained ballerina or simply enjoy a good Macarena, are the first one on the dance floor or only make a cameo during the electric slide, sometimes, you just need to get your dance on. If a crowded frat party isn’t your thing, or your roommate would prefer it if you stopped turning your common space into a dance floor, there are places around town that love to see you in your dancing shoes. Grab a friend or two and get ready to get down.
