Admission Dean J. Carey Thompson Receives Larry West Award for Outstanding Leadership in Admission Counseling

J. Carey Thompson, vice president for enrollment and communications and dean of admission at Rhodes, received the 2013 Larry West Award, the highest distinction given by the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC). Thompson was recognized at SACAC’s annual conference held in Memphis April 20-23.

Larry West Award is a leadership award based on longevity of service and dedication to SACAC, outstanding contributions to the admission counseling profession, leadership within the profession and dedication to students. The award is named in memory of one of SACAC’s presidents, Larry West.

Thompson, who joined Rhodes in August 2010, leads the college’s Division of Enrollment and Communications comprising the offices of admission, communications, Rhodes Express, and financial aid.

Prior to coming to Rhodes, Thompson was the vice president of enrollment and student planning services/dean of admission and student financial planning at Centre College in Danville, Ky.

Thompson holds a master of education degree in institutional advancement from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Furman University. Actively involved in several professional organizations, he currently serves as president on the board of directors for the Common Application.
