While a student at Rhodes, Bert Geyer was awarded a 2013 Rhodes Center for Outreach in the Development of the Arts (CODA) Grant to create art in the vacant space located at 75 South Main St. in Downtown Memphis. As a result, he has created a wooden, architectural installation titled “A Detour and a Pause” that will be on display Friday, Aug. 2, 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event also is supported by the Downtown Memphis Commission.
“Geyer took initiative to apply for a student grant from CODA at Rhodes to fund materials and studio space to make a large work of art,” says CODA Director Liz Daggett. “It’s wonderful to see his work continue to evolve and his studio practice to flourish, and for that work to be available for the entire community to see.”
Geyer received a B.A. in art from Rhodes this year. The aim of his spatial sculptures is to provide some escape and to examine the idea that occupant and environment coproduce experience.
