Frankin Dakin ′14 To Receive Vanderhaar Student Peace Award

Frankie Dakin, a Rhodes junior and Millington, Tenn. Alderman, will receive the Dr. Gerard A. Vanderhaar Student Peace Award on March 14 at the 2013 Vanderhaar Symposium held at Christian Brothers University (CBU).

The Eighth Annual Vanderhaar Symposium will feature local leaders discussing “Communities Engaged in Resolving Urban Social Conflict.” Each year at the event, the Student Peace Award is given to a Memphis college student who best exemplifies the spirit and practice of active nonviolence consistent with the life and works of Dr. Vanderhaar who was a professor of religion and peace studies at CBU for more than 28 years.

Dakin is a participant of Rhodes’ Bonner Scholarship program for students who have a passion for service and social justice, and he has served as an intern for Memphis-based organization BRIDGES. In 2012, Dakin became the youngest alderman ever elected in the city of Millington.

Rhodes senior Janelle Adams was a finalist for this year’s award. Past Student Peace Award winners from Rhodes include Anthony Siracusa in 2009 and Laura Dallas McSorley in 2006.
