One of the first big events at Rhodes every year is Parent/Family Weekend, when parents flock from all over to get a peek into the lives of their students. In addition to navigating the winding sidewalks and trying to tell the gothic buildings apart, parents sit in on their students’ classes, attend faculty mixers, and cheer on the Lynx. Lots of entertaining events are on the schedule, but it’s also traditionally a big weekend for philanthropic efforts on campus—and this year’s event was no exception.
Kappa Delta started off the weekend by hosting All-Sing, the sorority’s annual fundraiser for Prevent Child Abuse America. All the fraternities and sororities competed with songs from the 90s, in honor of KD’s 90 years on campus. Men’s a capella group Woolsocks and the Rhodes Cheerleaders also entertained the crowd. Sigma Nu and Tri-Delta tied for first place in the competition with boy band charm and Britney Spears spunk.
Throughout the weekend, Chi Omega sold wristbands to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The blue wristband provided discounts from stores and restaurants all over Memphis and free food during the tailgate. On Monday they had their wish-granting event, giving eight-year-old Devin his dream of going to Legoland.
Tri Delta held a fun run/walk to benefit St. Jude Children’s Medical Hospital. Other events included GlobeMed’s annual art auction, which benefits a clean water initiative in Nicaragua, and Pi Kappa Alpha went pink with a flag football tournament and fund-raiser walk against breast cancer, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
