Tell the story of how you got to Rhodes College.
During my college decision process, I visited a variety of schools across the country that presented different opportunities. I fell in love with Rhodes because of its small size and its focus on community values. On my first visit, I knew that Rhodes was a place where I could grow and learn, both academically and professionally. Furthermore, the fellowship that I received from the theatre department affirmed what I had already thought–that this community was something I wanted to be a part of and enjoy.
How have you changed since beginning your studies at Rhodes College?
The liberal arts education provided by Rhodes has given me the opportunity to expand my horizons in my field of academic study. Moreover, the Foundations Curriculum challenged me to think outside the box and to try new things. Theatre operates in a multidisciplinary arena that pulls from all areas of study, which this curriculum encompasses. By exploring a wide variety of subjects, I have developed a new perspective on theatre as both an industry and a lifestyle.
You recently returned from a semester abroad in Italy. Tell us about your time there.
Last semester in Italy was incredible. Through a scholarship from the theatre department, I had the opportunity to study physical theatre at Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo with 27 other theatre students from across the United States. This residential program focused on the study of Commedia dell’Arte, philosophy, movement, and voice. Experts in these various fields traveled from other parts of Europe to work alongside us. In addition to my academic work, I also traveled throughout Tuscany and to other parts of Europe during my time abroad, which further expanded my view of the world. This semester ended up being one of the most rewarding and enlightening opportunities that I have ever experienced.
How has the theater department at Rhodes affected your theatre career as well as your student experience?
The theatre department has provided wonderful, enriching opportunities during my time at Rhodes. From acting to directing to set design, I have been able to explore the many facets of theatre in ways that only a small, student-centered college can offer. For example, this semester, I am part of a collaborative effort to create a new play with my faculty advisor as well as other students. This play is scheduled to be part of the 34th season at the McCoy Theatre.
With a focus on directing and theatre management, obtaining an overall well-rounded experience of theatre is extremely important to me. I am so thankful for the knowledge and mentorship offered by the faculty and the support and friendship of other theatre students. Through this department I have gained, and continue to gain, greater confidence in myself and in my work, and look eagerly to the opportunities ahead.
