Maggie Blake ’14 Spends Summer As Marine Science Intern in Delaware

Maggie Blake ’14 has been conducting research this summer in the marine science internship program of the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.

Undergraduate science majors from across the country gain field and lab experience in this competitive 10-week internship program and work one-on-one with experts on their own research projects. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Sciences, the program awards participants a stipend, campus housing and travel assistance. It concludes Aug. 9.

Blake, a biology major, has been working with Dr. Jonathan H. Cohen of the University of Delaware and studying visual mechanisms in copepod (a group of small crustaceans) mating behavior.

At Rhodes, she has been conducting research on African elephant behavior, and her zoology presentation received an award at the spring 2013 Western Regional Meeting of Tennessee Academy of Science Tennessee Academy of Sciences Collegiate Division.

Blake is a graduate of Collierville High School in Collierville, Tenn.
