Our Favorite Meals at the Rat

There are few universal truths in life, but the most delicious one: we all gotta eat. Fortunately, Rhodes is good about meeting this need with two different dining options: the Rat and the Lair. While the Lair pretty much serves made-to-order eats all the time, the Rat mixes it up, providing students with new options every day. Here are our top five favorite meals:

1. Broccoli Cheese Soup

While all of the soups at the Rat tend to be beyond awesome, this one is definitely a favorite. It’s creamy, cheesy, and green, and it goes great with a salad from one of the two salad bars in the dining hall. It’s especially perfect on a cold, rainy day in Memphis!

2. Turkey Burgers

For a healthier grill option, look to the turkey burger. Lean ground turkey on a warm bun makes for a nice low-fat meal, but if you’re still looking for a salt kick, you can pair it with freshly made fries.

3. Chicken Parmesan

This meal is definitely a campus favorite, and it’s obvious—on chicken parm day, a wrap-around-the-Rat line is not rare. Usually served up with cheesy pasta marinara, fresh green beans, and warm garlic bread, it is totally worth the hype.

4. Peanut Butter, Banana, and Chocolate Paninis

Although this one is more of a rare occurrence, we had to put it up here because it is just so good. Imagine a gooey, chocolatey, peanut buttery religious experience, and you got this bad boy.

5. Fried Chicken Friday

This one is not so much of a meal as it is a time-honored Rhodes tradition. Every Friday, you can feast on fresh fried or baked chicken, mashed potatoes or mac and cheese, and some kind of fresh vegetable. After your first one, don’t be surprised if you start counting down the days until next Friday.
