Dr. Jonathan Judaken, the Spence L. Wilson Chair in the Humanities at Rhodes, has been a Fulbright Senior Specialist since 2011 when he accepted an invitation from Haifa University and Tel Aviv University to give a series of lectures and seminars in Israel connected to his work on anti-Semitism. He now has accepted an invitation to the Isaac and Jessie Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research in Cape Town, South Africa for two weeks, beginning on June 23.
The Fulbright Specialist Program (FSP) promotes linkages between U.S. academics and professionals and their counterparts at overseas universities or institutions with education focused programming. The program is designed to award grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in collaborative projects at higher education institutions in over 100 countries worldwide. Candidates are approved by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and remain on the Roster of Specialists for a five-year term.
Eligible activities include short-term lecturing, conducting seminars, teacher training, special conferences or workshops, as well as collaborating on curriculum planning, institutional and/or faculty development.
While in South Africa, Judaken will be engaged in networking with colleagues both in Johannesburg and Cape Town. He will give a public lecture at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium on the South African Jewish Museum campus in Cape Town on July 3. In addition, he will give a seminar on Emmanuel Levinas and the Holocaust at the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies.
Prior to his visit to South Africa, Judaken presented a seminar in Berlin on May 29. He also will speak in Paris at the Nuit Sartre celebration on June 7 at theÉcole normale supérieure.
