During her undergraduate career at Michigan State University, Hoffman was involved in alternative spring break trips to Appalachia. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (additional concentrations in Spanish and public relations) and served as an AmeriCorps GED instructor in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia for a year.

Hoffman then attended Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and earned a master′s degree in education with a focus in higher education administration. She also worked as a graduate assistant for The Ingram Commons, Vanderbilt’s first-year living and learning community where students live with faculty members.
