Emerson Fellows are placed with community-based organizations across the country and with policy-focused organizations in Washington, D.C. to make a difference in eliminating hunger and poverty in the United States. The new cohort of 18 change-makers began their work this month.

The goal of the research is to gain a better understanding of the actions of nitric oxide used by the human immune system as a chemical defense to fight off bacterial infection and how bacteria such as Salmonella can evade these actions. The research has potential to identify new cellular targets for novel antibiotics.

W. Taylor Reveley III will deliver “Why We Need The Constitution And The Constitution Needs Us” on Sept. 15.

The rankings evaluate 1,500 colleges and universities across the country, Rhodes ranked No. 55— sharing that position with four other colleges—for National Liberal Arts Colleges. Rhodes also landed at No. 23 for Most Innovative and No. 26 for Best Undergraduate Teaching among liberal arts colleges.

Prof. Nelson is a recognized Presidential scholar and the Fulmer Professor of Political Science at Rhodes. Among the courses he teaches is The American Presidency.

Forbes ranked colleges and universities across the U.S. based on the return on investment and outcomes they delivered for their students.

Anne Beard has been named chief of staff at Rhodes College. She graduated from the college in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in international studies and currently serves as director of development for the Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law.

A short film titled The River by Rhodes English major Janay Kelley ’24 made its premiere at the seventh annual Indie Memphis Youth Film Fest held Aug. 26 at the Halloran Centre. Kelley produced the film with two $5,000 Youth Production Packages she received in 2018 and 2019 as winner of the event’s Grand Jury Prize for two consecutive years.

Three physics majors at Rhodes College— Mackenzie Gibbs ’22, Jess Hamer ’23, and Olivia Kaufmann ’23—have received national recognition through the Society of Physics Students.

Not all colleges get to hold a national championship in their city. But Rhodes College will get that chance in April 2023, when it hosts the American Mock Trial Association National Championship that will bring to Memphis the top 48 teams in the country. And, to top it off, this is the program’s 35th anniversary.
