Chemistry research students Danielle Wilson ’17, Calli Pinckney ’17, Jess Rogowiec ’17, Kendall Reed ’17, Alex Graves ’17, Emily Harrison ’18, Samantha Jelinek ’18, John Dewar ’18, Caroline Magee ’19, Madison Perchik ’19, Rebeca Roldan ’19, and Lane Brandt ’19, and physics research students Luke Fairbanks ’18 and Matthew Huber ’18 presented their research at the Arkansas INBRE Research Conference in Fayetteville, AR, Oct. 21-22. The students from Rhodes earned five awards at the conference.
Samantha Jelinek (neuroscience) won first place in the Chemistry Posters category for a presentation based on her research into inhibitors of the MAOB enzyme. Alex Graves (chemistry) won Honorable Mention in the Chemistry Posters category for a presentation based his research on catalysts for artificial photosynthesis. Madison Perchik won Honorable Mention in the Chemistry Oral Presentation category for a presentation based on her research into inhibitors of the Phenylalanine Hydroxylase enzyme. Luke Fairbanks (physics) won Honorable Mention in the Physics Oral Presentations category for his research on ultrasonic bone assessment. Finally, Matthew Huber (physics) won second place in the Physics Posters category for a presentation based his research on ultrasonic characterization of bone.
Jelinek and Perchik work in the lab of Prof. Mauricio Cafiero. Graves works in the lab of Prof. Will Eckenhoff, and Fairbanks and Huber work in the lab of Prof. Brent Hoffmeister.
There were a total of 65 oral and poster presentations in the Chemistry division this year, and 36 oral and poster presentations in the Physics division. Also attending the conference were Profs. Peterson, Cafiero, Eckenhoff and Hoffmeister as well as students Rebecca Evans ’19 and Abel Diaz ’18.
