The Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) program at Rhodes College has been designated as a Hidden Gem by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA).
ACTA’s Hidden Gems initiative highlights honors colleges and major, minor, and certificate programs that provide high-quality interdisciplinary education in the liberal arts. Launched in 2019, it now numbers 23 institutions spanning from coast to coast.
“The Philosophy, Politics & Economics program at Rhodes College brings together three disciplines that are inseparable if one wants to acquire a complete understanding of social and political problems and issues, one that accounts for both the moral and the practical dimensions,” said Dr. Stephen Wirls, director of the PPE program, in a news release about the Hidden Gem designation.

The program is an interdisciplinary curriculum offering various courses that include works that laid the foundations for political and economic systems throughout the world; political economy from international and comparative perspectives; contemporary economics, relationships between individual goods and common goods; historical developments in public policy and economic life; ethical dimensions of public policy, and an introduction to methods of scholarly research.
The central objective of the program is to engage majors--through lectures, seminars, and symposia—in rigorous and intellectually invigorating examinations of the competing practical and theoretical arguments and visions. PPE alumni can be found in fields ranging from government to law to communications.
