Prof. John Bass to Discuss Relationship of the Guitar to the History of Jazz at GPAC

Dr. John Bass, assistant professor of music and program manager for Rhodes’ Mike Curb Institute for Music, will give a talk as part of Germantown Performing Arts Center’s (GPAC) Arts Savvy Jazz Series.

On Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., he will discuss the peculiar relationship of the guitar to the history of jazz. From its role as a rhythm machine, to its breaking out as a solo—and even featured—instrument on the bandstand, this conversation will center on how the guitar fits into the narrative of jazz history and a look at the players who placed it there.

The event is free and open to the public. Please contact Emily Hefley at emily@gpacweb.com or 901-751-7665 for reservations.
