Dr. Shadrack W. Nasong’o, chair of Rhodes’ Department of International Studies, recently received the 2016 Ali Mazrui Award for Scholarship and Research Excellence at the Annual Africa Conference held at the University of Texas, Austin. The award is named for Prof. Ali Mazrui (1933-2014) who wrote on Africa throughout his scholarly career, publishing more than three dozen books and hundreds of book chapters, journal articles, and newsmagazine commentaries.
In honoring Nasong’o with the award, it was noted, among other things, that “Dr. Nasong'o has published prolifically, and his scholarly achievements have been widely acknowledged by various institutions . . . Dr. Shadrack Wanjala Nasong’o is one of the most prominent critical voices on African politics in contemporary global academia.”
His current research focuses on post-genocide reconstruction in Rwanda, protracted ethnic conflicts in Eastern Africa, and the nature of political actors in the Kenyan public space.
In 2012, Nasong’o won Rhodes’ Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity.
