Dr. Nikolaos Zahariadis, Mertie Buckman Chair and professor of international studies at Rhodes College, has assumed the role of co-president of the South region of the International Studies Association (ISA). The term is from January 2026 to December 2026.

Founded in 1959, ISA is dedicated to understanding international, transnational, and global affairs. Its more than 7,000 members span the globe – comprising academics, practitioners, policy experts, private sector workers, and independent researchers, among others.

Zahariadis serves as co-president along with Dr. Adam Van Liere of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In their roles, they will champion the organization’s policies and governance, enhance member engagement, and implement strategies that pave the way for growth and success.

“This is the perfect opportunity for Rhodes students to participate in academic activities because the South meeting encourages undergraduate students to present their research papers and even provides an award for the best undergraduate paper presented at the annual meeting,” said Zahariadis.

A native of Greece, Zahariadis has taught at Rhodes since 2016 and has published extensively in the areas of European public policy, comparative political economy, foreign aid, and nationalism and security in Southeastern Europe. He also is an editor of International Review of Public Policy and has served on various editorial boards. Zahariadis is a two-time recipient of the competitive Fulbright Specialist Award, which provides for academics to engage in two- to six-week-long project-based exchanges at institutions across the globe.
