Dr. Timothy Huebner, the Irma O. Sternberg Professor of History and associate provost at Rhodes College, has been named chair of the board of editors of the Journal of Supreme Court History, published three times a year by the Supreme Court Historical Society in Washington, DC. In June 2021, Melvin I. Urofsky retired from the position after serving the Supreme Court Historical Society for 30 years.

“The Journal of Supreme Court History is the premier multi-disciplinary publication on the history of the Supreme Court and the Constitution, drawing together scholars and writers in the fields of history, the law, and political science,” says Huebner. “I consider it a high calling—and a real pleasure—to engage students, scholars, and the public about the history of this enduring yet evolving institution. I believe that in doing so, we all become better caretakers of our inherited tradition and wiser participants in our civic life.”

Huebner has served as associate editor of the Journal of Supreme Court History since 2010 and has written for the award-winning SCOTUSblog, the leading source of information on the Supreme Court of the United States. A specialist in the constitutional and legal history of the American South, he is the author or editor of four books including Liberty and Union: The Civil War Era and American Constitutionalism and The Taney Court: Justice, Rulings, and Legacy.

At Rhodes, Huebner teaches a variety of courses dealing with the history of the U.S. Constitution, the Supreme Court, and the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era.
