Professor Murray’s New Book Tells About Children in America’s First Public Orphanage

Dr. John E. Murray, J. R. Hyde III Professor of Political Economy at Rhodes, recently was interviewed for the podcast New Books in History about his new book The Charleston Orphan House: Children′s Lives in the First Public Orphanage in America.

The Charleston Orphan House, the first public orphanage in America, saw to the welfare and education of thousands of children from poor white families in the urban South. According to Murray, it is a study of public private partnerships in the antebellum South.
