The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced that Rhodes has been awarded the 2017-2018 Commissioner’s Cup. The Commissioner’s Cup, formerly known as the Presidents' Trophy, recognizes the SAA institution with the overall best varsity athletic program.
The results are based on the top eight sports per gender, and points are given for final standings in the regular season for sports that play a regular season and for the order of finish in championship play for those that do not.
Rhodes won seven regular season titles in Men’s Cross Country, Field Hockey, Men’s Golf, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Track & Field, and Women’s Track & Field. Runner-up teams included Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Swimming & Diving, and Baseball. Those 10 teams combined for 77 of Rhodes total points.
The Lynx then edged Centre for the all-sports title after taking home three championship titles across both Track & Field teams and Men’s Golf in the final weekend of countable standings, bringing their total points to 110. Centre claimed second place with 101.5 points, while Berry was third with 98 points, Birmingham Southern fourth with 93 points, and Sewanee rounded out the top five with 83.5 points.
Rhodes previously won the all-sports trophy during the 2014-15 academic year and was second in 2012-13 and 2013-14.
