Rhodes College has been selected for the FirstGen Forward Network Class of 2026, a recognition that highlights the college’s dedication to enhancing the college experience and to promoting success for first-generation college students.
With the new Class of 2026, the FirstGen Forward Network encompasses more than 500 institutions, making it a premier platform for elevating student achievement through a focused lens on first-generation college students.
“FirstGen Forward exists because we believe institutions are strongest when they learn alongside one another—sharing evidence-based practices, working through challenges together, and advancing first-generation student success at scale,” said Dr. Stephanie J. Bannister, president of FirstGen Forward. "Rhodes College is joining a community of practitioners doing exactly that, and the Class of 2026 represents a remarkable groundswell of energy and commitment. I know Rhodes College will be a meaningful contributor to what we build together."
Rhodes defines a first-generation college student as a student whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) did not earn a bachelor's degree.
Through its initiative Rhodes F1RST, the college is expanding opportunities that foster belonging, leadership development, career readiness, and community for first-generation students. The initiative is led by Connie Beck, dean of student success. Beck will work with Rashna Richards, associate provost, to strengthen collaboration between student life and academic affairs and advance first-generation student success across campus.
As a FirstGen Forward Network member, Rhodes will engage with peer institutions across the country through professional development, collaboration, goal setting, annual reporting, and the sharing of evidence-based practices that strengthen support for first-generation students. Beck and Richards will serve as Rhodes’ institutional representatives within the network.
Members of the Rhodes community are invited to a celebration welcoming the college’s newest first-generation students during the inaugural Rhodes F1RST Welcome Kickoff on Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. in Hardie Auditorium.
