The Rhodes College chapter of the Tennessee National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (TNNCTA) hosted two educator workshops in May. The first workshop, held on May 2 on campus, welcomed 23 local educators and administrators. A second workshop on May 9 was held at the Nissan manufacturing plant in Canton, MS, where 28 educators participated.
Both workshops centered on the theme “Teaching Asia in a Changing World,” with educators exploring how to incorporate Asian history, politics, culture, and contemporary global issues into their classrooms. Faculty presentations by Dr. Lynn Zastoupil, Dr. Chien-Kai Chen, and Dr. Steve Ceccoli addressed topics including Gandhi and nonviolent resistance, U.S.-China strategic competition, and U.S. partnerships with Japan and South Korea.
The May 9 workshop in Mississippi featured a special presentation by Dr. Casey Shin, based on his recent book From Nothing to Nissan.
The workshops were organized through the Tennessee chapter of the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, which is a nationwide initiative dedicated to strengthening the teaching of East Asia in K–12 education. TNNCTA program is directed by Dr. Steve Ceccoli and Dr. Han Li at Rhodes.
