Rhodes senior Sarah Kate Childs has been accepted to seven law schools—Harvard University, Duke University, University of Virginia, Cornell University, Georgetown University, Vanderbilt University, and Washington University in St. Louis. In addition, she has received almost $900,000 in scholarship offers.
Childs, who is from Huntsville, AL, is pursuing a double major in international studies and Latin American and Latinx Studies. She has interests in immigration law, criminal justice, and juvenile advocacy.
“The Department of International Studies has been instrumental in my journey at Rhodes. Each and every one of the professors has had a profound impact on my academic and personal development,” said Childs. “From thought-provoking courses to the international internship program, this department has more than prepared me to confidently enter law school in the fall. I would like to especially thank Dr. Esen Kirdis, Dr. Amy Risley, and Dr. Nikolaos Zahariadis for all their help and guidance throughout both the application process and my time here at Rhodes. I also cannot thank Professor Anna Eldridge and Mrs. Sandi, Mrs. Amy, and Ms. Rachelle with Career Services enough for all their help.”
During her time at Rhodes, Childs has been a varsity women’s soccer player and a peer academic coach. She currently is Model United Nations coordinator, a Rhodes Student Associate, and active in Greek life.
As a Rhodes College Mertie Buckman International Intern, Childs worked for the Municipal Women's Directorate in Guatemala during the summer of 2023.
“Being a part of the small, close-knit community at Rhodes has allowed me to pursue various opportunities I would not have had otherwise, such as engaging in research and participating in the Rhodes Student Associate Program,” said Childs. “The personal relationships formed with both faculty and my peers facilitate an environment whereby I am constantly encouraged to step out of my comfort zone and further explore my interests and passions. I too am so grateful to Dr. Elizabeth Pettinaroli who recommended that I pursue a double major and is now helping me research topics in Latin American and Latinx studies which enrich my academic experience and equip me for my legal career.”
