The Spence Wilson Center for Interdisciplinary Humanities at Rhodes College will host a conversation with Dr. Shelly Lowe, former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) on Thursday, April 24. Lowe will speak on “Weaving Together Past, Present, and Future: The State of the Humanities Today.”
The National Endowment for the Humanities was founded in 1965 and has awarded more than $6 billion in grants to museums, historic sites, universities, libraries, and other cultural and educational institutions. During her tenure, Lowe supported new NEH initiatives designed to strengthen our democracy as well as address the ethical, legal, and societal implications of artificial intelligence.
A citizen of the Navajo Nation, Lowe became the 12th chair of NEH in 2022. She is a member of the National Council on the Humanities and has served on the boards of the National Indian Education Association and the National Museum of the American Indian.
The Rhodes event begins at 6 p.m. in the Spence Wilson Room in Briggs Hall. This event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required via this link:
