One of the major benefits of staying around campus during the summer is being able to enjoy activities that might be placed on the back burner during the busy academic year. Whether students are here for summer classes, internships, or other school-related programs, they often discover new things to love about Memphis. We asked a few of them what they've enjoyed this summer.
Sabine Lohmar '19
"I love being able to have time in the summer to plan my own meals and buy fresh food from the Farmer's Market and support local farmers. Also I love Overton Bark, the dog park. I get to meet so many sweet pups and meet other dog owners in Memphis. Midtown Yoga is just great to use, because they have such a packed schedule of classes that I usually can't go to during the school year."
Murphy Wilt '18
"Having time to take advantage of all of the great music is a major draw for staying here during the summer."
Andrew Fox '19
"I've enjoyed my internship, which has helped me to interact more with the community and enabled me to try out many downtown restaurants I previously wasn't exposed to. My favorite so far has been Maciel's Tortas & Tacos."
Tony Eskridge '20
"Besides Spanish 201 with the coolest people, the Levitt Shell and Clayborn Temple’s 15 Film Series were some pretty cool Memphis things I experienced while staying on campus this summer."
Robert Stodola '19
"The firm I work for partners with Tennessee Valley Authority, and I recently was able to learn and inventory all the sustainable efforts Memphis is pursuing."
Ryan Rosenkrantz '19
"The Rhodes Institute [for Regional Studies] has allowed me to learn about and explore Memphis in ways the normal school year doesn't leave time for. I’ve learned more about Memphis from brilliant professors and knowledgeable peers and the work we (and others) are doing and continue to do in the Memphis community."
Katherine Hancock '19
"One of my favorite things to do this summer has been to visit Jerry's Sno Cones. Having more free time this summer made it easier to justify the longer drive to Jerry's, and I’ve made a point to try new flavors instead of sticking to my favorite, Blackberry Supreme."
Amri McCauley '19
"I went canoeing on the Ghost River and saw the musical Rent at the Orpheum through The Big Diehl. Their summer programming has been wonderful!"
