Student employees are essential to the college, bringing their creativity, ideas, and energy to the workplace.

Student Employee Appreciation Week at Rhodes is April 10-14, which will include recognition of this year’s Student Employee of the Year Audrey Bishop, Rhodes Student Associate of the Year Eliza Howard, and Supervisor of the Year Ethan van Drimmelen.

Through the Rhodes Students Associate Program (RSAP), motivated students work alongside faculty and staff and gain career experience and mentoring. Student associates, for example, supervise teams of students or manage lab spaces or special projects.

The Student Employment Program is available for students with demonstrated financial need to work in various jobs on campus, as well as at some nonprofit agencies off campus. Typical responsibilities include filing, data entry, mail sorting, or organizing equipment.

Here’s what nominees had to say about this year’s honorees:

Audrey Bishop

Student Employee of the Year: Audrey Bishop, mail services representative

“Audrey exceeds expectations and leads by example. Audrey is conscientious of her time and actions and how they affect others so she adeptly exercises a work/life balance. She is instrumental in making sure that things flow as seamlessly as possible in the mail center. When interacting with our customers, Audrey provides the level of service everyone expects to receive and appreciates. She is efficient and courteous to everyone she encounters. Audrey is responsible for all of the creative decorations the campus sees in the mail center during the holidays and assists with coordinating all the events in the mail center. She has maintained and even improved the culture we have in the mail center. Her impact is obvious to anyone who enters the mail center upon seeing and feeling the joy behind Audrey’s decorations.”

Rhodes Student Associate of the Year: Eliza Howard, physics department student associate

“Eliza’s work is thorough, and the result of her work always makes the jobs of the faculty easier, advances the understanding of other students, and makes the physics department better. Eliza’s conscientious personality, reliability, and empathy allow her to create innovative solutions that will directly impact the department and students for years to come. Eliza achieved well beyond the job description this past year. She spearheaded the Supplemental Instruction program, created a set-up guide for all the labs, and developed an effective catalog system to track equipment around the department. While Eliza will be graduating this spring, her exemplary efforts will have a lasting impact on the physics department and campus community.”

Supervisor of the Year: Ethan van Drimmelen, videographer/ photographer in marketing and communications

“I came into this job with no prior experience with videography filming or editing, so Ethan helped me build my filming skills and software skills from scratch with training from day one. Ethan is very detail-oriented and strategic about mentoring. He is also very caring and would always ask me about what’s going on with my school and life . . . Working alongside him, I had an authentic taste of working as a professional videographer in the real world.”
