Study abroad has become an increasingly important aspect of the Rhodes College experience. Today, more than 60 percent of Rhodes students call a different country their classroom for a few weeks or even months. Many faculty and staff on campus do the same. The Modern Languages and Literatures World of Photos Contest brings those experiences back to the Rhodes campus, right to the first floor hallway of Palmer.
The contest awards a first, second, and third place in three categories: People, the Natural World, and Urban Scenes. Additionally, one photo is selected as a People’s Choice Best in Show.
Photos aren’t limited to study abroad, but must have been taken outside the United States. At the end of the competition, the campus is invited to a reception held to announce the winning entries. This event gives contest participants an opportunity to share the stories behind the photos from their international experiences.
Submissions are now being accepted for this year’s competition, which is the 13th anniversary of the annual contest. Photos should be submitted to the Language Center, Palmer 102, by Friday, November 4. Here are the guidelines:
- Up to three submissions per person, no more than one per category
- Urban Scenes – urban landscapes and scenes of everyday life of international cities
- People – portraits or action scenes with one or more individuals as the focus
- The Natural World – animals in their natural habitat or international landscapes
- Photos must be taken outside of the U.S.
- Preferred print size: 8 x 10 (5 x 7 minimum)
- Quality print, mounted on cardstock or matte; no frames
- Color or black/white photos accepted
- Applicants must provide digital submission at 300dpi to waldkirchc@rhodes.edu
- Open to all students, faculty, and staff
