Rhodes’ Mike Curb Institute for Music recently hosted jazz saxophone legend and Memphis native Charles Lloyd to discuss his career in music. In addition to Rhodes students, the event was attended by Cordova High School’s music students and members of the White Station High School band program.
Rhodes College Hosts Jazz Night at the Levitt Shell
Rhodes College and the Mike Curb Institute for Music hosted Rhodes Jazz Night at The Levitt Shell on Sept. 15 as part of Family Weekend celebrations. The annual event featured acts like legendary Memphis jazz vocalist Joyce Cobb, the Rhodes Faculty Players, the Rhodes Jazz Band, and the Stax Academy Jazz Ensemble.

        R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Rhodes Gathering Pays Tribute to Aretha Franklin
On Aug. 29, a mix of faculty, staff, and students gathered in Rhodes’ Hyde Hall as the strains of “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” and “Son of a Preacher Man” played in the background. They came for lunch and an intimate discussion about the life, music, and Memphis roots of Aretha Franklin, who died Aug. 16.
