Rhodes College President Elected to National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s Board of Directors

Rhodes College President William E. Troutt has been elected to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s (NMSC) Board of Directors for a three-year term.

Established in 1955, NMSC is an independent, not-for-profit organization that conducts nationwide academic scholarship programs including the National Merit® Scholarship Program and the National Achievement® Scholarship Program.

The mission of the board is to promote a wider and deeper respect for learning in general and for exceptionally talented individuals in particular; to shine a spotlight on brilliant students and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence at all levels of education; and to stimulate increased support from organizations that wish to sponsor scholarships for outstanding scholastic talent.

Troutt has chaired the National Commission on the Cost of Higher Education, the Board of the American Council on Education, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program.

The NMSC board is made up of business executives, college and university officials, and secondary school administrators.
