Rhodes College has been awarded a $500,000, three-year grant from the Mellon Foundation to expand and enrich its innovative Liberal Arts in Prison Program. The Rhodes program began in 2016 with a weekly Great Books Reading Group at the Women’s Therapeutic Residential Center, a state prison in Henning, TN.
Four to Vie for Coveted 2020 Truman Scholarship
Rhodes’ Postgraduate Scholarship Committee is endorsing four juniors to compete for the 2020 Truman Scholarship, the premier graduate fellowship in the United States for those pursuing careers as public service leaders. They are Olivia Brown, Teasha Dogra, Jacob Fontaine, and Matthew Mussalli.

Modern Language Association Puts Spotlight on Success of Rhodes’ German Program
Rhodes College’s German Program is featured in an article about successful language programs actively building new communities and connections. It appears in the Fall 2019 issue of Profession, which is published by the Modern Language Association (MLA), one of the world’s largest scholarly associations.

Annual awards were presented at Rhodes College’s Alumni Convocation on Nov. 16 during Homecoming/Reunion Weekend. Dr. William Van Davidson from the Class of 1962 received the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Sherry L. Turner from the Class of 1984 received the 2019 Black Student Association Distinguished Alumni Award.

Adam Cruthirds '20 Raises One Million Dollars for St. Jude
While undergoing chemotherapy treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital after being diagnosed with leukemia at age 16, Cruthirds founded Adam’s Army to raise money and awareness for St. Jude’s work. He says his goal has always been to raise one million dollars, which he reached just ahead of the December 7 St. Jude Memphis Marathon.

Rhodes College Names Dr. Katherine Clay Bassard Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
After a competitive national search, Rhodes College president Dr. Marjorie Hass has appointed Dr. Katherine Clay Bassard as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2020. Bassard earned a B.A. from Wake Forest University, an M.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a doctorate from Rutgers University. She will also serve as professor of English and Africana studies.
