Rhodes College Students Make Meaningful Connections Despite Social Distancing
As a senior, remote learning is an unusual way to wrap up college; but what eclipses this reality is, of course, how COVID-19 is affecting the entire world. Though individuals across the globe are being asked to retreat and isolate, I find myself reflecting on how this situation is creating more intentionality, consciousness, and empathy surrounding social engagement.

Rhodes College Adopts Test Optional Admissions Policy
Rhodes College will not require prospective students to submit SAT or ACT test scores for the classes entering the Fall of 2021, Fall of 2022, and Fall of 2023. The college is conducting a three-year test optional pilot project in light of the COVID-19 situation and cancellation of College Board and ACT test dates this spring.

Emma Taylor ’20 Works to Maximize Meaningful Employment and Service Opportunities for Rhodes Students
“I like helping people create resumés and showing them how to communicate with employers. I feel like I have been given a lot of responsibility, designing programs for students. The position has really solidified my skills in terms of creativity and leadership,” says Taylor, who is pursuing the community health track of the urban studies major and is interested in becoming a registered nurse or nurse practitioner. “I feel like working in Career Services has also helped prepare me for applying to schools for nursing.”

100-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Shares His Poignant Story with Rhodes Audience
Members of the Rhodes community and local residents gathered in the Bryan Campus Life Center Feb. 25 to hear 100-year-old Sam Weinreich share poignant moments of one of the most horrific times in history. He and his 95-year-old wife, Frieda, are the oldest Holocaust survivors living in Memphis. “You are looking at a piece of history, because there are not too many people around anymore who can tell you exactly what happened,” he told a packed room.

Acclaimed London Director Nick Hutchison to Teach Shakespeare Masterclass at Rhodes
Acclaimed London actor and director Nick Hutchison will present a masterclass on directing Shakespeare at Rhodes College Saturday, Feb. 29. In addition to offering this masterclass, he will be co-teaching Rhodes courses and presenting a workshop at Crosstown Concourse. His three-week artistic residency is sponsored by the Pearce Shakespeare Endowment.

Actor Geoffrey Owens to Present Artist Talk and Shakespeare Workshop at Rhodes College
Rhodes College’s Department of Theatre and Hattiloo Theatre are bringing actor Geoffrey Owens to the McCoy Theatre, located on the college’s campus, this weekend, Feb. 7 and Feb. 8.
Open to the public, events include “An Evening With Geoffrey Owens,” featuring a conversation with Hattiloo Theatre artistic director Ekundayo Bandele on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m., and a workshop, “Taking The Fear Out of Shakespeare: Acting Master Class,” on Feb. 8. from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both events are free.
