New Louise Taylor and Annie Trawick Chamber Music Series to Celebrate Liberal Arts Through Music

The Louise Taylor and Annie Trawick Chamber Music Series has been established at Rhodes College, thanks to the generous support of Dr. Morris Reagan, a physician and member of the Rhodes College Class of 1960. The series is named for his mother and grandmother and will provide Rhodes students with experiences with professional chamber music performers as well as career opportunities in music.

Chemistry Students in Prof. Shana Stoddard’s Lab Publish Research Advancing Drug Design for Cancer Therapies

Dr. Shana Stoddard, assistant professor of chemistry, and students in her research lab have co-authored articles recently published in two peer-reviewed journals—the International Journal of Molecular Sciences and the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry. They have successfully tested several of the designed drugs that have the potential to be cancer therapeutics. Current work in the lab is focused on synthesis of more drug candidates that have been identified in the lab.

Three Rhodes Faculty Added to National Network Supporting Diversity in Higher-Ed STEM Communities

Dr. Erin Bodine, associate professor of mathematics; Dr. Sarah Boyle, associate professor of biology; and Dr. Loretta Jackson-Hayes, professor of chemistry and director of scholarly and creative activity mentoring, are members of the inaugural cohort of the Advancing STEM Careers by Empowering Network Development (ASCEND). ASCEND is funded by a nearly million-dollar National Science Foundation grant that runs through September 2024.

Rhodes Junior Ramiz Somjee Named a 2020 Goldwater Scholar

Ramiz Somjee, a junior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology at Rhodes College, is among 396 college sophomores and juniors nationwide selected as a 2020 Goldwater Scholar. Established in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, the scholarship program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Jenna Faust Receives Post-Graduate Teaching Fellowship in Greece

Jenna Faust ’20 has been selected for a Student Services Fellowship by Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece, for the 2020-2021 academic year. The program serves as an educational bridge between the United States and Greece, seeking to promote American liberal arts educational values with traditional Greek pedagogy and learning.
