Professor Valeria Nollan of Rhodes’ Department of Modern Languages and Literatures has been invited to give a lecture at John Cabot University in Rome. She will speak to the university’s faculty and students on the topic, “The Italian-Russian Connection: Catherine the Great’s Reception of Italian Composers, Writers, and Architects at Her Court” on May 28, 2013.

She also will finalize plans for a course on Catherine the Great that she will teach at John Cabot in the summer of 2014.

The Women′s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the 2013 WBCA Division III Coaches′ All-America Team on March 14.

Shayla Purifoy, who graduated from Rhodes in 2003 with a B.A. in urban studies says in aMemphis Daily News article her senior seminar was on community policing. With this experience and the mentorship of her professor Mike Kirby, she decided she wanted to become a police officer.

Frankie Dakin, a Rhodes junior and Millington, Tenn. Alderman, will receive the Dr. Gerard A. Vanderhaar Student Peace Award on March 14 at the 2013 Vanderhaar Symposium held at Christian Brothers University (CBU).

Twenty-three Rhodes students are in the Dominican Republic for a week of service work as part of Rhodes’ annual Alternative Spring Break trip. Students have travelled to the town of Cruz Verde to assist on a variety of service projects including constructing houses, working with local children and helping to develop irrigation and sustainability initiatives.

Memphis’ first “street newspaper,” The Bridge, will hit the streets March 21. Founded by Rhodes sophomores James Ekenstedt and Evan Katz, it aims to raise awareness around issues of homelessness and poverty while providing a sustainable source of income to those who have personally experienced homelessness. The paper is managed by Rhodes sophomore Caroline Ponseti, and she and the founders recently were interviewed on WHBQ/FOX-TV.

Dr. Vanessa Rogers, assistant professor of music at Rhodes, has been awarded a Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of London’s Institute for Musical Research (IMR).
