A new exhibition celebrating the work of Dr. David McCarthy, professor of art and art history at Rhodes College, will be on display from Jan. 30 through March 28 in the college’s Clough-Hanson Gallery. McCarthy has taught at Rhodes for more than three decades, during which he has developed a body of scholarship and a teaching philosophy that demonstrate how artists reflect and shape the times in which they live.
Vocal Performance Major André Moore ’19 Credits Music Faculty with Furthering His Craft
From classical to R&B to hip-hop, André Moore, more commonly known as Dré on campus, is a walking symphony of melodies. For his success during his time at Rhodes, the senior vocal performance major likes to give credit to the professors who have been instrumental in his formation as a singer and a producer.

Seven Members of the Class of 2019 Selected for Rhodes’ Hall of Fame
The portraits of seven graduating seniors will be added to Rhodes’ Hall of Fame, housed on the second floor of Southwestern Hall. They are Aylen Mercado, AnDrea Hargrove, Hamid Shirwany, Rebeca Roldan, Pooja Dave, Zaria Jones, and Ryan Rosenkrantz.

Recording Artist and Minister Kirk Whalum to Deliver Baccalaureate Address, Architect Jane Cady Rathbone to Receive Honorary Degree
The Baccalaureate Service of the 170th Session of Rhodes College will be held on campus May 10, followed by Commencement on May 11. Rev. Kirk Whalum, an award-winning recording artist and an ordained minister, will deliver the Baccalaureate address. Jane Cady Rathbone, a principal of the Hanbury architectural and design firm, will receive the Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree at Commencement.

Lynx Win Five Championships
Over the course of April 25-28, 2019, Rhodes College athletics participated in 10 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) tournaments/championships. The Lynx won five team championships—women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s track and field, women’s track and field. There also were six individual champions and two relay champions in track and field.

Rhodes Honors Professors Amy Risley and Michael LaRosa With Clarence Day Awards for Outstanding Teaching and Research
They were recognized at the college’s annual Awards Convocation, held on campus April 26. Prof. Risley of the Department of International Studies, received the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching. Prof. LaRosa of the Department of History, received the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research and/or Creative Activity.

Rhodes’ 2019 Literary Journal Dedicates Section to Memphis’ Bicentennial
This year’s issue was produced by students in Prof. Amy Benson’s literature course English 265, which focuses on literary magazines and the role they play in shaping literature. Students gained hands-on publishing experience, including editing, design, and promotion.

Lauren Sumski ’14 Named Head Coach for NCAA Division I Lipscomb University
Rhodes’ head women’s basketball coach Lauren Avant Sumski ’14 has been named head coach for NCAA Division I Lipscomb University. She will become the fifth head coach in program history for the Nashville team and the first-ever female to lead the program.

Matt Dean Named Rhodes College Director of Athletics
Matt Dean has been interim director of athletics since October 2018. Over the course of his now 28-year career at Rhodes, he served as head women’s basketball team coach for 15 years, becoming the college’s winningest coach in program history.
