They were recognized at the college’s annual Awards Convocation, held on campus April 26. Prof. Risley of the Department of International Studies, received the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching. Prof. LaRosa of the Department of History, received the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research and/or Creative Activity.
This year’s issue was produced by students in Prof. Amy Benson’s literature course English 265, which focuses on literary magazines and the role they play in shaping literature. Students gained hands-on publishing experience, including editing, design, and promotion.
The senior biology major is from Huntsville, AL. She will serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Malaysia.
Rhodes’ head women’s basketball coach Lauren Avant Sumski ’14 has been named head coach for NCAA Division I Lipscomb University. She will become the fifth head coach in program history for the Nashville team and the first-ever female to lead the program.
The senior international studies and Spanish major is from Colorado Springs, CO. She will serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Peru.
Matt Dean has been interim director of athletics since October 2018. Over the course of his now 28-year career at Rhodes, he served as head women’s basketball team coach for 15 years, becoming the college’s winningest coach in program history.
Jason Haberman, assistant professor of psychology, and former student Malerie McDowell ’17 have co-authored a paper to be published in a forthcoming issue of the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS ONE.
The senior history major is from Elm Grove, WI. He will serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Lithuania.
The Rhodes senior is an anthropology and sociology major from Lexington, KY. She will serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Vietnam.
As a 2018 Rhodes Summer Service Fellow, JB Hayes ’19 worked for Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA). There, the urban studies major helped develop a new program that helps to break the social isolation and loneliness felt by many homebound seniors.
