Dr. Alicia Golston has been promoted to dean of students at Rhodes College, effective July 1, 2019. She served as associate dean of students in 2017 and became associate dean for student experience in 2018.

Her new novel, The Gone Dead, has been featured by The New York Times as one of the “12 New Books to Watch For in June.”

Study abroad is an integral part of a liberal arts education at Rhodes, introducing students to courses, internships, and research opportunities around the globe. The college is now making it possible for students to use their federal and institutional aid on any one of more than 300 Rhodes- affiliated semester-long study abroad programs.

Based on qualitative fieldwork, the 240-page book explores the strategic decision-making of six Islamic political movements in Jordan, Morocco, and Turkey.

Using cutting-edge technologies in robotics, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, students in Dr. Ross Sowell’s Human-Robot Interaction course and Dr. Betsy Sanders’ Virtual Environments course showed off their computer science skills at an end-of-year exhibition of class projects. 

The biochemistry and molecular biology major from Mandeville, LA, has been selected as a 2019 Goldwater Scholar from a field of 1,223 sophomores and juniors nominated by colleges and universities nationwide.

Rising juniors and seniors at Rhodes got to boost their career prospects and gain insights from industry leaders, think-tank scholars, and public officials on a recent trip to the nation’s capital.

While undergoing chemotherapy treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital after being diagnosed with leukemia at age 16, Adam Cruthirds began to think about fundraising ideas for the hospital. As a result, he founded Adam’s Army, which has raised more than $700,000 to help end childhood cancer. Cruthirds, a rising senior at Rhodes, was recently honored by Leadership Memphis as a Change Maker.

Four Rhodes employees—Alonzo Longstreet, Jennifer Logan, Tierney Jackson, and Karen Mosley—were recognized with the college’s 2019 Outstanding Staff Awards based on nominations submitted by faculty, staff, and students. The presentations were made May 16 at the annual Service Recognition Brunch.

The 12-month fellowship in Bonn, Germany, provides the opportunity for a recent graduate to develop an understanding of the Crop Trust’s work and the issues associated with agricultural biodiversity conservation.
