Newstok Awarded Grant from the State Research Agency of Spain

Dr. Scott Newstok, professor of English and executive director of the Spence Wilson Center for Interdisciplinary Humanities at Rhodes College, has been awarded a four-year grant from the State Research Agency of Spain. This award will support his scholarship on the multilingual heritage of early modern English across legal, religious, political, and literary discourses. Newstok’s project was one of 37 funded among 254 applications; in the three-year history of Spain’s research program, he is the second recipient who works in the humanities, and the only recipient from a liberal arts college.

Prof. Chien-Kai Chen Writes New Book on China-Taiwan Economic Ties

The book is titled Political Economy of China-Taiwan Relations: Its Origins and Development. Prof. Chen’s teaching and research interests included the political economy of East Asian countries, China’s domestic politics and foreign relations, democratization, state-society interactions, and economic interdependence.
 

Six Mertie Buckman International Studies Interns Selected

This Rhodes program is coordinated by staff from the Department of International Studies, Career Services, and the Buckman Center for International Education. Ben Tracy, Bella Harden, Austin Schmude,  Alex Schramkowski, Hamid Shirwany, and Zach Thornton are the new interns.

Rhodes Board Chair Receives Jefferson Medal in Citizen Leadership

Rhodes College Board of Trustees Chair Cary Fowler received the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Citizen Leadership. As this year’s honoree, Dr. Fowler gave the keynote address at Monticello in Charlottesville, VA. during Jefferson’s 275th Birthday Celebration.
