A physics major and math minor, Eleanor Hook is interested in all aspects of these subjects, from research to local outreach to legislative policy.

This Rhodes program is coordinated by staff from the Department of International Studies, Career Services, and the Buckman Center for International Education. Ben Tracy, Bella Harden, Austin Schmude,  Alex Schramkowski, Hamid Shirwany, and Zach Thornton are the new interns.

The Rhodes senior is pursuing a double major in international studies and Russian studies. “While in Kazakhstan, I will further examine how this Central Asian republic, with two official languages, intends to implement English language programs as part of its ambitious development goals,” he says.

Daniela Garcia, Emily Forehand, Laurie Williams, Nickolas Erickson, Merare Sanchez, Aylen Mercado, and Anna Maldonado were among the students who attended the symposium.

A Rhodes senior pursuing a double major in political science and Russian studies, Elizabeth Lewis will serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Belarus. “I plan to examine the role folk music plays in community building and the preservation of tradition,” she says.  

An expert on demographic shifts, she plans to use the fellowship to share research from her current book project on population and to reach out to private sector audiences that use demographics to forecast trends.

Rhodes College Board of Trustees Chair Cary Fowler received the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Citizen Leadership. As this year’s honoree, Dr. Fowler gave the keynote address at Monticello in Charlottesville, VA. during Jefferson’s 275th Birthday Celebration.

The Fulbright Specialist Program sends U.S. faculty and professionals to share their expertise, hone their skills, and strengthen institutional linkages at academic institutions abroad.

National Scrabble Day is observed each year on April 13, but during the fall semester at Rhodes, Professor Scott Garner includes Scrabble, chess, Monopoly, and other board games among discussion topics for his first-year writing seminar.
