Rhodes College Celebrates 100 Years in Memphis

Rhodes College, established in 1848 in Clarksville, TN, and a nationally recognized liberal arts and sciences institution, is celebrating 100 years in Memphis, TN. The college moved to its current location under the leadership of then president Dr. Charles E. Diehl, and classes began on Sept. 24, 1925, with 406 students and 16 faculty. In recent history, Rhodes has enrolled approximately 2,000 students each year. Students admitted for fall 2025 hail from 45 states plus the District of Columbia and 64 countries, with 20 percent of this year’s entering class coming from Memphis and Shelby County.

Dining Room at Rhodes College Named in Memory of Tina McWhorter ’66

New Dining Hall West is now the Tina McWhorter Dining Room named in memory of Rhodes alumna Tina McWhorter ’66. McWhorter died Dec. 28, 2021, and included a generous gift to the college in her estate plan.

Prof. Elaine Frawley Awarded $300K National Institutes of Health Award for Microbiology Research

The goal of the research is to gain a better understanding of the actions of nitric oxide used by the human immune system as a chemical defense to fight off bacterial infection and how bacteria such as Salmonella can evade these actions. The research has potential to identify new cellular targets for novel antibiotics.

Rhodes College Achieves High Rankings in U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-2023 Best Colleges

The rankings evaluate 1,500 colleges and universities across the country, Rhodes ranked No. 55— sharing that position with four other colleges—for National Liberal Arts Colleges. Rhodes also landed at No. 23 for Most Innovative and No. 26 for Best Undergraduate Teaching among liberal arts colleges.
